Psilocybin
Anyone try psilocybin in Mexico? 60 Minutes had a report on it tonight and it sounds exciting and scary. It is only being offered in medical research centers in the US.

I was wondering if there were contraindications for old farts.

Re: Psilocybin
I think it would be fun, if you were sure of the quality of the psilocybin, were in a good state of mind, and had a trusted friend/partner to do it with. And a whole day with no obligations. Why do you want to do it? Don't know what age would have to do with it. Have fun!
I remember laughing a lot. I remember colors being exquisite. And I remember 3 of us standing on the shoreline in Baja, side by side, arms linked together, trying to tip the world over. On the count of three! One, two, three . . .

I couldn't find any negatives except that it shouldn't be used by people who have schizophrenia or impaired liver function. Everything goes through the liver eventually so I imagine that aspect is about the ability to get rid of by-products safely. And it seems as though people with schizophrenia have never been test subjects.
If it's about depression and the ability to cope with our own rapidly approaching inevitable death, then it seems to have a positive effect.

I thought it was what Metamucil was made of but that’s psyllium.

¡SĂ, verdad!  Hay muchos colores mas en el arcoĂris. Great learning tool for artists working with colors.

One of the subjects in the study was an older lady who was having bouts of depression and anxiety because she had advanced cancer. Once she got the psilocybin the fears went away. Now she enjoys every day in spite of the cancer getting worse.

Exactly! The studies do mention a controlled environment if help is needed. I think that means with someone who is not partaking.

The lady had had crippling anxiety most of her life. Cancer only exacerbated it. Under controlled conditions it seems to help mental health issues.

Pollan said that psilocybin makes the self or ego diminish in importance and gives you a different outlook on life.

Re: Psilocybin
My first magic mushroom experience at the age of 26 absolutely changed my life and in a totally positive way. Before that I was more introverted, more self focused and after, it seemed that I had a much bigger perspective and not so self absorbed. Since then I have partaken maybe 10-15 times, the last one just a few years ago at the age of 59. In my opinion cubensis are the best to use but I have picked and taken liberty caps in the US a few times as well. As I have aged the effects are more pronounced as to the physical feeling and I do not think I will be doing them again but the effect from the first time I took them has stayed with me and made me a much better person, of that I am sure.
My oldest daughter has issues with depression and an occasional dose does wonders for her in that regard. My understanding is that it can be a great tool in battling psychotropic breaks, much more so than most traditional medications. It is also being looked at for treatment of PSTD and a myriad of other issues.
From my personal experience I would advise to use a small dose at if the person is at a more advanced age. Even when I was younger I did not take as much as most people would because I like to be "in control" and am not looking to see "god" or whatever, but it can have an amazing effect on body and mind, that is for sure:-)

Great story, ITCG, thanks for sharing. I feel the same way about LSD, it changed me and it changed my life - for the better.

Re: Psilocybin
I grew 8 peyote caps to about 3" round each. They have been dried and ground into a powder . Just waiting for an appropriate time and place to experiment.

Re: Psilocybin
I've eaten peyote twice, once for the Monterrey Pop Festival once for fun. The taste is SO VILE that it is difficult to get down. Almost all of us vomited. After that, it was an awesome kaleidoscope of music and colors. The second time we blended it with strawberry yogurt and it was palatable.
I found it not as mind-bending or introspective as LSD was but all the fun stuff with music and colors.
If you eat it, Bob, take it little by little. A little goes a long way. Have fun!
