I used to think it was 'all in the genes.'  My mother lived to 92, her sister also to 92 and her brother lived past age 100.

Then last year both my brothers died, one at age 80, the other was 73. Both lived relatively healthy lifestyles, physically active their entire lives, not overweight.

I now think it's luck of the draw.

BisbeeGal, true but I bet statistically it leans to genes being overall the main determinate but there are always exceptions. And there are environmental things now that probably weren’t around 50 plus years ago that may be put into play.

So sorry over the loss of 2 brothers in one year. That’s a lot.

What was even worse, they died within 4 weeks of each other.

My 73 year old brother's death was expected in that he had been diagnosed with a progressive idiopathic pulmonary disease 5 years earlier.  He was the only one of us who never smoked (also didn't drink).  Was still running 10K's when he began having symptoms.  He died a year ago tomorrow.

My other brother, age 80, went to the doctor with abdominal pain; he died less than a month later.  Advanced liver cancer.  He wasn't the type of guy who ignored symptoms for long; have since read that liver cancer is often diagnosed in late stages.

It seems to me anecdotally that many people in my generation (boomers) are dying and/or have contracted serious diseases, while their parents lived into their 90s. I see and hear this all the time.  And not Covid related.

I think you’re on to something re boomers. Something not good does seem to be at work malevolently. Some might be attributed to not as much physical work/activities as the previous generation in every day routines not just as far as jobs but I remember my mother mowing our steep terraced lawn with a manual push mower in 95 degree, humid St.Louis summers until my brother was old enough. Add processed food, additives, pollution and who knows?

Again, sorry for your losses.
