For visitors to this informative forum who are considering Mexico as a relaxing, worry free, Holiday Destination.

Most Canadians say they won't be spending their tourist dollars in Mexico because of SAFETY concerns, ranking the popular tourist destination last among five other vacation hot spots.
In a poll of top vacation sunspots, Hawaii topped the list, with 95 per cent of Canadians surveyed saying they believe it is the safest of six destinations named. Florida ranked second at 92 per cent, followed by Cuba (78 per cent), Dominican Republic (72 per cent), Jamaica (64 per cent) and Mexico (29 per cent).

Dominican Republic, Jamaica SAFE?????? You have got to be kidding.
Jamaica wasn't safe 20 years ago. These folks must like to stay at the
all inclusive walled resort or whatever. That ain't Jamaica LOL. Cuba is
expensive as they make you convert your money and take a piece of
the action twice as you cash the money back in but it is safe. Florida
hot and humid been there done that. I am the only person in the
world who has not been to Hawaii so no comment. Trust me Lakeside
is much more safe than anywhere in Jamaica. People who were
surveyed need to do more homework before talking.

I imagine it is all about perception, not reality. I have also never been to Hawaii. No desire to go. I always thought of it as LA with nicer beaches. I have been to Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Both were easily as "dangerous" as anywhere I have been in Mexico. I didn't stay in resorts. In DR they read us the "do's and don'ts" on the bus ride to the hotel. They warned the women to never go out alone after dark, don't talk to the locals, etc, etc. In Jamaica I spend 1/2 the time saying "no I don't want any ganja" while the police looked on waiting to bust me if I bought any. Of course both those destinations have a small fraction of the Canadian tourists that Mexico does hence the reason we hear of fewer incidence.......

I would agree that Cuba is probably a safe place however I haven't been there yet.

Boy are you off on Hawaii. I had no intention of ever going there either but I had to work there a month a year for about 20 years and I fell in love with it.
You do not have to stay in the large resorts and it is not that difficult to escape the tourists. The climate is wonderful, the vegetation interesting and the culture fascinating, I have many friends there and would move there in a minute if I could aford a nice place away from the crowd.
Each Island has its own personality and there is a little bit of everything for every taste.

Large numbers of native Hawaiians students go to Oregon State University and we even had Hawaiian food in town but when you talked to the natives they really gave
you the impression that you won't be welcome and they really would rather have the gingoes and gringas stay home. They were not mean or anything but I got the
message and after that went elsewhere. I kinda understand it coming from Maine but we had an expression if it is Tourist Season why can't we shoot them!! I just
don't go where I am not wanted and I felt like we were only wanted in the Tourist areas. I don't want to go to the tourist areas therefore I have not gone. I am not
a very good tourist and don't go where they tell ya to go. Once again no one was mean or nasty it is just something I heard on a pretty consistant basis from the
natives. Actually the only reason I want to go to Hawaii is to go to the Ross dress for less near the airport. I hear it has very discounted Hawaiian shirts which is a
weekness for me. What a crazy reason to go there:-)
