Need Help !!

My upper middle class Mexican neighbors say the Policia Estatal are not to be trusted, only the Federales, Army and Marines.

I wouldn't trust the Federales either.I've heard too many stories about them from people who know what they're talking about.

For me, the military are the most trustworthy and I'm not too sure about them either.

Long ago a friend of mine who was a Mexican airline pilot and I were tooling around the friendly skies of Ensendada in his private plane and he decides to land at the military airport for more beer. "What?" says I, you crazy boy, we got pot, empty beer cans and the cockpit smells to high heaven. No problemo, he says them guys don't bother with small fry. So he comes back to the plane with a hefty bag full, seems they were also having a special on lobster.

Don't forget, for the optimistic out there, that El Presidente has announced and funded a new Federal police force (up to 10,000 officers), modeled on the Gendarme system. These officers will also have community training and people skills. The concept is to develop an effective national police system with an esprit d' corps, and parents would be proud if their sons and daughters signed up. He has said that there has been too much attention on organized crime, not enough on grass roots policing.

Well, Let us see. The cops at all levels in Mexico are corrupt and incompetent so tet us see if we can come up with a solution to this endemic problem. I get it, what say we start a new sterling, uncorrupted police force by renaming these guys and teaching them elementary civics.

If we are going to call these guys gendarmes, will we supply them with bicycles and those shrill little whistles their namesakes in Paris use to chase, but never catch, illegal Africa immigrants in that city.

When I lived in Colonia Insurgentes in Guadalajara there was a well known guy a couple of blocks from us who had been selling coke out of his house for over a decade,the local cops knew about it but were paid off,then some AFIs (Feds)got wind of it and made a deal with him,he could continue doing business but only if he agreed to move the cocaine they supplied him with,nobody elses,he agreed.A year or so later a neighbor of his sent an anonymous tip to the army,they arrived with a truck full of soldiers and busted him,a few days later the AFI commander paid a 100,000 peso bribe to the army guy and Felipe was released and allowed to continue his operation.That's how things work around here sometimes.

Last fall Proceso ran a good article on the same subject. Extrajudicial policies and impunity for the military. How many generals have been arrested for being dirty. Gutierrez Rebollo being one of the more infamous cases.

I dunno. . .I've got some good stories about the old days in this country too that are much like that one. . . Wild and hair raising. And all true. And all will go to my grave with me. It was a different time here in those days. And it sure was fun!

Could be. The movie is on Youtube - it's about infiltrating a Mexican organized crime gang and stealing the gangster's girl, who was impressed by his dance moves. Even though it was 1941, it's funny how things stay the same!!!

Could also be Tin Tan. He often portrayed a Pachuco. He was 'hipper' than Cantiflinas, but not as funny. I collect these old posters.

Holy moly, the actor in the poster is none other than Mario Moreno aka Cantinflas. You folks need to brush up on Mexican culture.

I think they're referring to the guy on the water tower.

The Pachucos were the start of Mexican gangs in Los Angeles. There were the infamous "Zoot Suit Riots", which weren't riots at all - the federal government sent int the Navy to strip and beat anyone wearing a zoot suit. 112 people ended up in hospital, but no deaths.

The federal government did not send in the navy,sailors and marines stationed in So Cal took it upon themselves and got a lot help from the LAPD.

I think that's more like it. More the way I remember it too.
