OBAMA CARE
My understanding is effective 1/1/14 all US Citizens are required to carry medical insurance? Has anyone received info regarding the issue, and how it will apply to expats?
I tried to sign up my wife under the affordable care act, and was advised there is zero money available now. Just trying to figure out what penalties one might face for non compliance.
TIA

Re: OBAMA CARE
Penalty right now is $600.00, this will be increased after the election to $900.00. Insurance must cover eveything including maternity, pre-natal, pediatric, orthodontic, etc. LOL, like the seniors really need that.
Ex-pats can avoid having to comply if they are permanently living out of country. This means for 330 days/year. One is allowed in the states for 35 days/year. IRS may check passport info for this? They do everything else.

Not good, wife can't get insurance here, but medical is affordable, and cost NOB since is out of question. I wonder since she isn't on SS, I am covered on Medicare, spend 60% time in US, wondering if they will hit me for penalty....if they do.....good reason to get a divorce, then she gets public assistance....LOL.....scary deal finacially.

Since you have plenty of time on your hands, here is a PDF file for your reading pleasure:
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-111hr3590enr/pdf/BILLS-111hr3590enr.pdf
The entire Affordable Care Act is boiled down to a mere 906 pages. Have fun reading and a test will follow.

Seems to me you should sell that place in Phoenix and just stay in Mexico Fulltime. Probably a lot cheaper in the long run......

itsme, have they published minimum income levels, for compliance....one spouse on SS & Medicare, the other not on either, can't possibly pay for insurance, let alone penalty. Just Wunderin?

With Medicare one is required to have SUPPLEMENTAL insurance, I believe that is called "Part B". This is where the penalty comes in. If you are a permanent resident of another country, you do not get Medicare. I gather one cannot have it both ways. Have to stay out of the US. I also understand O'care was to bring down costs per family $250.00, but it has risen by $3,000.00.

Re: OBAMA CARE
I have Healthnet of Arizona as my supplemental part B and there is no extra charge, works like a HMO. As long as I am not out of country more than 3 consecutive months I am covered in an emergency, however must pay out of pocket and submit for reimbursement.
ITSME, O Care is a joke......JUST SAYIN....don't think it's gonna be implemented.....certainly not on schedule.

I had not heard that Part B was required. If so, why wasn't a notice sent to all of those on SS as they did when we turned 65 offering it or to opt out? I've looked on the web with Google, etc. and find NO MENTION that Part B is required. Please cite a source for this assertion. As for the $3000 increase, please cite a source for your assertion. This all sounds like a Faux News load of BS to me.

Re: OBAMA CARE
My take on the entire matter is that the "stories" are being generated by either political party depending on their point of view and a spin that they hope works to their advantage. I don't think it is any deep dark secret that the "working details" haven't all been worked out? They (all of them) do need to get it in gear and put together a plan for the benefit of all citizens!
I do know of one Republican leaning company ownership here in Albuquerque who has announced that there will be no raises for 2013 because of the Affordable Care Act going into effect in 2014. Total BS!

Re: OBAMA CARE
The misinformation about the ACA is mind boggling. A conservative friend (yes, I have some) said the ACA was evidence that Obama was a socialist. I explained to him what a "socialist" is (when the gov't has control of the means of production, distribution, and exchange are controlled by the state) he said, "Well, you may be smarter than me, but I know Socialism when I see it!"

David, I don't think part B is required......For the record, my wife can't get OBAMA care as they are reportedly out of money, so no inurance as she has history of stroke, HBP. We did get one US quote of $6800.00 with exclusions for preexisting, with a $6800.00 deductible, pretty much wiping out her SS till she is 65!
You can get part B at virtually no charge, as Oregon offers the same part B plan as Arizona. It is called Healthnet. Alot easier for us as we split 50/50 US and MX. My agent tells me as long as I am not out of country for over 6 consecutive months, emergencies are covered, I pay and submit for reimbursement.
Just an FYI

Re: OBAMA CARE
Can't speculate David....without trying to create a mass debate, OBAMA care is a mess, people promised coverage can't get it, obviously medical care in Mexico is more cost effective, readily available, than it will ever be in the good ole USA!

Why would some people not want to hear it? It sounds like good news no matter what your first opinion was of the ACA.
