Tablets!
I love my Android Kindle Fire! There is no way I can imagine my life without it now. The amount of free stuff is staggering and I've downloaded so many apps, books, and music that I am never at a loss for something interesting to play with - or learn about.
And just think how they'll improve in the years to come. I look forward to lighter ones but other than that, pretty darn near perfect in my opinion.
Who do we have to thank for this gift, Steve Jobs??? Genius.

Re: Tablets!
Kindles, Nook, Kobos... unfortunately, none are sold commercially in Mexico. A variety of tablets with Android operating systems can be had here at computer stores. Many, however, used crippled versions of the Android OS, and the cheaper ones have underpowered chips, so can be quite frustrating for first-time users.
I use my Google Nexus 7 for reading magazines in colour, and my Nook (Simple Touch with GlowLight) for books. I will be ordering the new Kobo Aura HD to take advantage of the sharper resolution and clearer text.
The Fire has very good resolution, which makes it a good choice.

Re: Tablets!
If you're not tied to Android or iOS and want a great value....
Check out the BB Playbook: it is avail locally, I believe, and hard to beat for the $$. Very bright 7 inch screen, GPS, gyro, dual excellent cams, dual speakers, bluetooth, WiFi, and more - also has both micro USB and micro HDMI connections. BB AppWorld has really added a lot of apps in the past year.
I'd get at least the 32 GB version if avail....

Re: Tablets!
I'd like to see the price, and if it's available down here. In Ottawa, where RIM is located, pricing online for Future Shop and Best Buy is non-existent, other than a "refurbished" 32 gigger at $189, 60 bucks off. The 16 Gig was discontinued, and the price on Amazon is pretty cheap for both the 32 and 64 compared to the actual retail. Not sure what's going on there... it may be failing altogether, the way RIM has been going.
I would personally not go with something that has such a proprietary OS, however, because of the lack of apps and the lack of a hugeWeb community like the other OSs. Especially if this goes under.
But I would like to know if it's available here, Go Solar.

Re: Tablets!
RIM is in Waterloo, fyi....they have 2 Billion in cash and are not likely to "go under" IMHO. Maybe a merger; the QNX system garners high praise and envy from the WW computing community from what I see & hear.
The PB is a true pro grade tablet; the performance, screen and the build quality is exceptional. Apps lag Apple and Android, of course....yet they've added tons this year and have a pretty full range if you check AppWorld.
Here are a couple of links in MX I found quickly, likely many more to be found: Bestbuy.com.mx and also on mercadolibre. (wouldn't let me post the actual links)

Re: Tablets!
RIM started in Ottawa and has a major presence there. I worked across the street.
Their stocks are down, their performance is abysmal, and they could easily drop the non-profitable tablet line. I worked in hi-tech in Ottawa for 15 years, and it was "nothing" for a company like Nortel (absolutely huge) to cut off an entire arm of the business. (While I was under contract for their VoIP business, they chopped the whole division and 2,500 employees, just like that.) So don't place any bets on a Blackberry Playbook.
I don't disagree that it's an excellent tablet, however. My son, in the business, bought himself one and loves it. However, in a year or two (knowing him and his age group), he will dump it for something else newer anyway.

Re: Tablets!
Well, we're way off the original topic....
When one buys a tech product, you're not making a long term bet on the stock; you are looking for good value & quality. And my point was that the PlayBook at these prices fits that description. Glad we agree on that, at least.
As for the company: QNX was an Ottawa company, later bought by RIM. RIM was always HQ'd in Waterloo.
I wouldn't bet heavily against them:
http://www.bnn.ca/News/2013/6/7/BlackBerry-to-beat-Street-on-strong-Q10-demand-Analyst.aspx
As for the guys who "ran" Nortel....into the ground.... they should be in jail - they probably would have sold their parents into slavery, IMHO, so hopefully not something we'll have to see again.

Re: Tablets!
This is a great conversation, dude.
(Yes, QNX originally, but since no one outside of Ottawa seems to have heard of them in that iteration, I stuck with my RIM comment.)
But just to be clear, I'm not betting on the stock... I'm betting on the sales of the Tablet. My history on this kind of thinking, and therefore my recommendation to those curious on this thread, is this:
- Bought a Texas Instruments T4A as my first computer. It was the best computer you could buy in terms of CPU and RAM, light-years ahead of Atari and Commodore and Radio Shack. Who won? Not TI. Not me.
- Bought Beta equipment for my video (used BetaMax gear in my career). Beta was better and cheaper than VCS. Who won? Not Sony. Not me.
The BB tablet will die, as far as I'm concerned. Even if it doesn't happen soon, your choices with iPad and Android tablets are far better.
As far as apps go, at approx. 100,000 for Playbook and 900,000 for Android... well... and since getting new apps seems to be the raison d'etre for most users... .
(Nortel laid off about 10,000 employees the very few years I was there. It was abominable.)

Re: Tablets!
How many apps does one NEED? Most have 30 to 50 tops.....we all know 98% of those 100,000 to 900,000 are "fart" apps. ;-)
Good recent article (from CIO) and comments as well from users:
http://blogs.cio.com/blackberry/18068/blackberry-playbook-tablet-hdmi-mlb-baseball
Not to mention the Flash capability so you're on real internet and not a mobile version.....and it is one of the few tablets that has a screen bright enough to use outside, even in the sun.

Re: Tablets!
Well, my point with the apps is not how many you need, but how many you get to choose from. The fart-to-real app ratio is probably the same in either case. I liken it to why I keep my PC, and only use an Apple on the side: far better choice of tools for my requirements. (This was cinched the day Adobe released their first version of PhotoShop for the PC, before they released the Apple version.)
Having Flash on my Nexus would be a major improvement for surfing. (I did get a version 11.1 for Android 4.x here: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html)

A couple of "Flashers" out at mid-day in the MX sun? Sounds painful.

Re: Tablets!
Old thread but I thought I would pass this along. Most of my electronics got ripped off back in December so I´ve slowly been replacing them. My Mexican friends all have told me the Chinese tablets were all junk so I not paid much attention to them. Went up to Centrotechnologia, corner of Hidalgo-Santa Monica just looking around and found an import tablet, smartbitt with dual core 1.5 ghz processor, android 4.2, long life battery, 8gb memoria flash, and RAM 1 GB similar to a Samsung Tab3. One year warranty and comes with a theft warranty too, free replacement. I´ve had it two weeks now and it works better than the Asus Memo7 I bought at Best Buy at 3x the price. Time will tell, but if you are in the market for something inexpensive it may be worth you time to take a look. 699 MXN

7" pantalla,
http://www.smartbitt.com/tablet_7lux.html
The one gb RAM is the difference between this model and most of the import Chinese. Screen flow smooth, so far, "changitos" (cross your fiingers)

Re: Tablets!
The tablet is Smartbitt Smart Tablet 7" with Android 4.2. Purchased at ivexcom, second floor Plaza Tecnocentro, Guadalajara. After a few months so far the only problem has been the wifi reception is weak compared with my other devices. Video quality is not quite as sharp as my other tablets but I may have some settings wrong.
If I get a year out of the Smartbitt I figure I got my value out of it.

Re: Tablets!
Thank you.
The wi-fi is pretty damn important to me.
Why do you think it will last only a year?

Re: Tablets!
I will lose it or break it most likely. I don't have any idea how long it may last. The tech world changes so fast I figure a year or two at most and then time to look for another.
