The horse race Empty The horse race

The horse race.

First I would like to give you some background information. For those of you that haven't been to a Mexican horse race let me tell you that it is a little bit different then what we have north of the border.  Mexican horse races, at least the ones I've been to, are more like a drag race. It does not happen on an oval track like they have up north.  My best Mexican friend, Chuy, has a very good horse that is called Recuerdo (remember).  This horse has won several races in the last year in Jalisco.  About a month ago, Recuerdo raced in El Zapote  which is located about halfway from Chapala on the carratera to Guadalajara on the west side.  In that race, Recuerdo lost and I lost 500 pesos.   This week Chuy told me that Recuerdo was ready for a return match on Saturday in El Zapote.

On Saturday at about 4 p.m., Chuy met me to give me a ride to the race.  We picked up several members of his family, I would guess about 10 and we all piled in the pickup for the ride to El Zapote.  When we got about a half of mile from the racetrack, Chuy's pickup developed a problem and it could go no farther.  It might have been vapor lock or a problem with dirty gas but anyway we were stuck. Luckily for us friends that were going to the race came up behind us and we we were able to pile in their trucks and make it to the racetrack.  The race was to be for 300 meters.  We settled in near the finish line with a cooler full of ice, Squirt and tequila.   I was supposed to take a photo at the finish line but when the race started I was not ready and didn't take any photos. Again, Recuerdo lost the race and I lost another 200 pesos.

We hung around for a while after the race but then it started to rain and we managed to get rides to where Chuy's truck was.  Luckily again, Chuy's truck started and we got on home.   The family was not depressed with the loss but they were stoic like the Mexican people are and took it in stride.

I am so happy for my friendship with this Mexican family. I get invited to all their events and they treat me like their grandfather.
