Best Cheap Eats

Since there's not too many people posting right now, I thought I would put out a new topic.  I tried to come up with something that's a little different than what's been posted before.

Every year, Nashville's weekly paper has a Best of the Best contest for all kinds of things.  Readers vote for their favorite restaurants, hair salons, etc.  Cheap eats is one of the categories.

What are some of the best places for cheap eats?  It can be tacos or lunch specials, whatever.  It can also include Guadalajara, but I will be in the Lakeside area most of the time when I'm there next month.  This is just for fun.

Cenaduria Elba's in Chapala! It's on Zaragoza, across the street from El Gato Negro. Get the mini bowl of pozole so you'll have room for the tacos al pastor. They open around 6p.m.

80 pesos for the luncheon special at Min Wah Chinese restaurant.
Bowl of soup (choice of 2 kinds), choice of one of about 10 entrees, fried rice, fried wonton, fortune cookie, and all the ice tea you drink.
Not gourmet S.F. Chinatown, but not bad either. Something different.

Jose's in the Chapala plaza...always reasonable.

Good fish special at Tabarka for lunch: $55 incl. fish, side and drink.

some of us play pool at a place next to thomas' bar in chapala. there is now a pork taco stand set up on the street at the corner of the soccer field for lunch. they are damn good and only 7 pesos each!

Turn north from the Carretera on Encarnación Rosas (where the doughnut shop is) in Ajijic and proceed to Lázaro Cárdenas.  Southeast corner of that intersection.

Wow!  Thanks for all the good suggestions.  Will be spending more time in Chapala, so glad to find out about those two.  

I'm glad I won't have a rental car, so I can walk some of the carbs off!

Are you trying to sabotage Mexico's new number one position in the world?  

Alfonzo's and Sonja's in San Antonio they have great taco's and other stuff open late.

Yep, on Thursdays.

IMHO, the tortillera across from the OXXO in Ajijic has the best burritos for only 20 pesos.  They are made to order and I usually have one with pork, rice, beans, and fresh salsa.  There is no place to sit down so I usually go to a bar on the plaza and have a beer and eat my burrito.  The best time to go is from about noon to about 4 p.m..

I think Tango's lunchtime menu is available weekdays Monday through Friday beginning at 12:30 PM.

Tango´s used to offer the special Monday through Friday. Hope that is still true.

Yes it is, 12:30 PM to 1:30PM.........  EXCEPT, closed Tuesday.

Tingen family, including the son-in-law owns it and the son-in-law runs it.  He had the knowledge/experience from being manageing partner/head chef at La Matera in Guadalajara.
The Tingen family expertise? was/is in real estate, magazine publishing...definitely not running restaurants.
I doubt if Ricardo (the son-in-law) gives a damn about the web board (TOB).
