I think the drunk duck thing was discussed on another thread.CheenaGringo wrote:But can they buy cheap booze and cigs?
I doubt if the Aflac duck would work for Mexican (duck) wages.

Habitat! Dickens' A Christmas Carrol" featured geese rather than turkeys. My Granny would say " Now your goose is cooked, gonna spank the Dickens out of you!

My questions was in response to your statement: "Domestic ducks and geese would love the climate here....just like Canadians."
Some time back CB clued us all in that Canadians moved to Mexico for cheap booze and cigs. My question had nothing to do with the drunk duck story.

Re: Cook a Goose
So, you were referencing the cheap ducks, not the drunk ducks--although I guess the cheap ducks could be drunk too? What about the mean, drunk pigs that post on the web board? This is getting complicated.

Re: Cook a Goose
There were some gawd awful wines in Canada in the 70's. Then again Britain had "Baby Cham" and the U.S.A. had the terribly trendy "California Coolers" -(cheap white win and Squirt!)
http://www.winesofcanada.com/babyduck.htmlIn its heyday, Baby Duck was a very successful product. It is a sweet, fuzzy wine modeled after Mateus, the popular wine of Portugal.
In 1952, Brights Wines purchased the Fred Marsh Wine Company. At this time, the Fred Marsh winery was working on developing a sweet sparkling wine. It was introduced to the market as Brights Winette. They used Labrusca grapes which could be obtained rather cheaply. This allowed Brights Winette to be sold at a low price.
Brights had control of the Sparkling wine market until Andrew Peller of Peller Estate Winery decided to enter this market, creating a line of Chanté wines. In 1971, they created Baby Duck, a soft-drink-sweet blend of red and white Chanté wines.
Hugely successful, Baby Duck was the best-selling domestic wine during the 1970s and it hatched numerous imitators: Canada Duck, Love-A-Duck, Kool Duck, Daddy Duck and Fuddle Duck were joined by Cold Turkey, etc… All of these wines driving the runaway expansion in the wine trade in the 1960s and 1970s were concocted from water, sugar and grapes that were judged unsuitable for making good quality dry table wines.
Baby Duck peaked in 1973, selling over 8 million bottles. Many people believe its popularity had to do with its easy-to-pronounce name. Baby Duck was originally made from “musky” native labrusca varieties such as concord and bath - and Andrés simply couldn't get enough of them. As well as encouraging local grape growers to plant more of these high-yielding and hardy varieties, B.C. wineries were obliged to import grapes and inexpensive finished wines from California.

Re: Cook a Goose
Last Xmas I purchased and cooked a goose ( natural free range type). It cost a lot. I researched how to cook said bird and followed the instructions. It did not turn out the way I wanted it to. The breast meet was so so. The legs and thghs - tough. My latest "Bon Appetit" suggested roasting the breasts (we're talking turkey now) and braising the legs.

Actually the animals disappear on a regular basis so I thin we have a duck and goose lover around the neighborhood...

Re: Cook a Goose
Now imagine 10,000 - 50,000 ducks next door - the average size of a commercial duck farm. Imagine setting up 'biocontainment' to protect the ducks from getting wiped out by disease (typically exposure to wild birds) and to protect the environment. Its a heck of a lot easier to sterilize a pond or field with a Wisconsin winter!

"50,000 ducks next door"....The quacking would be unbearable.
"How to Introduce Duck Disease into a Pond"...would be required reading.
Wisconsin winter? Do the "cheeseheads" really fancy duck 'n cheese?

Re: Cook a Goose
Yes I think it would be totally unbearable, just a few birds are enough to mae a lot of noise. They are good watch dogs and so are the turkey. I had to laugh, yesterday one of the male turkey decied he did not lie the gardener and went after him with vengeance..nasty thing, he was on the attack and the gardener was trying to kick him to make him go away but the turkey kept going after the poor man.
I had never seen an attack turkey before but they are no easy going things. Meanwhile the geese and ganders were ok and those guys can also be pretty aggressive. I remember them attacking us and our bicycle when we were kids.

Boring is in the eye of the bereader.
I enjoyed the story of the attack turkey and the gardner. Maybe you just lack imagination. I had the whole scene running through my head and it was quite humorous.

Re: Cook a Goose
some people need to learn more about ducks in mexico. this duck is more mexican than a chillun and is as native as some turkeys. this particular duck was also domesticated long before the spaniards arrived.
ducks unlimited also operate here in mexico. responsible hunters[elmer fudds] are the best conservationists . no "chinese" pheasants,"hungarian" partridge in norh america without hunters having brought them and no quail outside of there origins without hunters having done their thing.

I started it, but I didn't stretch it out. I forgot, you guys don't need toilet paper...
... oh, and you had to be reading it to know that it was a long one. And you could just say I have the most popular threads. Or poopular, if you prefer.

"Boring and mindless", acheived unconsciously (TOB) is different than acheived here with mild and not so mild machination.HelperGuy wrote:And you nice folks accuse TOB of being boring and mindless, with nothing to do in their spare time? Sheesh...

Re: Cook a Goose
Sorry Pedro no he does not or I would have bought some. They get stolen or lost but not sold unfortunately. The owner is from Guadalajara and these animals are his . He does not eat them or sell them , they just keep disappearing. He has horses, a donkey and many farm birds. The gardener takes care of them but that is about it.
