I would agree with you about the quality aspect and having spent a few of my formative years in upstate New York, there was a good deal of local pride about the fact that they were manufactured in Syracuse, NY during the 60's. Their history is an interesting read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ithaca_Gun_Company

i bought the japanese ithaca side by side 20guage in tranna and hunted with it in sask and alberta until it was stolen in edmonton outta my hunting van. they dint pawn it in yer place i guess. got replacement value which was more than twice  than i paid for it and helped me buy the berreta over and under 12 guage. much better quality and new book value when i left canada was about 2400.i think i paid about 160 fer the ithaca in the '60's. the berreta fer 1100 minus 300, because i bought it in my secretary's brother inlaw's shop.
