LAURENT Restaurant Review Empty LAURENT Restaurant Review

Post by johninajijic Sat Oct 22, 2011 10:59 am

Last night 9 of us from our Bi Monthly Dinner group ate at Laurent. Most of us ordered appetizers. Several ordered the Blue Cheese Creme Brulee, walnut and apple salad. The salad consisted of the white ends of the Romaine lettuce which I throw away when I make a salad. No one liked it. Another person ordered the Duck Pate salad, a huge portion, looked like a dinner. He said it was OK. Another person ordered the Shrimp Aioli which was serve in a crock dish. They said it was excellent and highly recommended it. I ordered the Onion Soup, a good sized bowl, with a nice cheese and bread. I thought it was very good.

For our Entrees, four people ordered Coq au Vin, one ordered the Tuna steak, one ordered Duck Confit, one ordered the Shrimp Aioli appetizer, one ordered Pasta Chuta (pasta with duck meatballs), highly recommended. I ordered the Filet Mignon with mashed potatoes. It normally came with french fries, but I asked for mashed. I received two generous sized Filets which I could have cut with a fork, so tender and juicy. Everyone loved their entrees. The portion sizes were large. The service was excellent.

There was only one other couple in the restauant, a damn shame considering it's one of the finest restauants in Ajijic.

The good news is that when we dined there on Wednesday evening there was a table of 6 and two tables of 4 and our table of 2. Laurent is doing fine. It will only get better for him as the snowbirds trickle down. Last winter season he was quite busy.

You're right, David. I get the impression that the snowbirds, as a rule, have more disposable income than the local retirees. Laurent's prices are higher than many others, and if you have drinks and an appetizer or other "extra", the bill gets up there.
He should do better during the "season".

Presumably Laurent has added a salad to that blue cheese creme brulee, when I had it there was nothing else. Also he must have added to the duck pate, since mine was just the pate and a pepper jelly. If he had thought to do that earlier, we might have been more impressed.

Panino's, hands down best. If you want Pouilly-Fuissé, perhaps Four, although I have never been impressed with either service, food or prices. BTW, if you ever go there dude, steer clear of the roquefort creme brulee. It's not a goer. JMHO.

Panino serves beer? Is that something new? Panino is the "best: for sandwiches. It's Panino, not Panino's.

Sammich and beer? How about Early Bird, 60's in Paradise, or Tony's?

Fussy pussy? Paz Liquors Beer . Take it home, chill it down and drink it on the deck feeling like a swell. Gatsby, here you is reborn.

Whatever, yes they serve beer, I've seen people drinking it there.

Well thank God for that, one could only imagine the markup Four would put on a bottle of Pouilly, whether fuissé or fumé.

Another suggestion is Tom's bar. John wouldn't appreciate this one. The sandwiches used to be pretty good, it has been a long time for me, but it is another option.
