A Lakeside Charity that helps local mothers and new-borns...

Interested in donating or participating - contact Julie at:
julieywayne(at)yahoo.com

"Nine years ago a group of us living at Lakeside began contributing to the
program. We make up packages consisting of a receiving blanket, two cloth
diapers, two disposable diapers, a sleeper, cap and socks for the newborn. For
mom we include two sanitary napkins, a pair of panties, and a pair of socks.
When the mom is admitted to the hospital a family member must take home all her
belongings and she is left with nothing more than a hospital gown. Rather
rustic medical care but we see improvements all the time.

Every three months we have a potluck luncheon at one of our members' homes and
we bring all the packages we've made with us. Just recently at our last
luncheon our group has decided to split from the Junior League group and focus
on the Lakeside area only.

You should see how anxious the mothers are to get their babies dressed. If the
delivery is free of problems, the baby is wrapped in a sheet and sent back to
mom's bed with her. Naturally, mom is thrilled to see the pretty pastel
clothing, blanket, and diapers. We deliver these packages locally at the Cruz Rojas,
a clinic in 6 corners and Tepehua community center.

We also collect soaps and lotions from hotels for mom's that have lost their
babies so they get something also. So if you travel, save the small soaps and
lotions.

We knit teddy bears for kids that get hurt or are burn or cancer patients. This
is the pattern for the teddy bears: http://www.squidoo.com/traumateddypattern

Many of us do not make packages but we have a woman (Katherine) who assembles the packages and we just get or make the supplies for her and give her all our goodies at the luncheons.

Julie also collects items for packages at her house in Mirasol.

Any and all help is appreciated. There is a great need here locally."

Remember this charity effort benefits lakeside mothers; many who have nothing take their baby home from a clinic in newspaper. There is a fabric store near the bus station in downtown Chapala that sells flannel just the right width for a baby blanket - just cut and hem on two sides. It's an easy evening project.

I just found out about this charity and an sorting through boxes and am finding lots of little soaps and next I'm into my fabric room to look for some nice flannel and fleece for baby blankets.

You don't need to make a whole package if you aren't up to the shopping; and any donated items are appreciated.
