Library/Biblioteca
Anyone know of a place to borrow books IN SPANISH either here or in Guadalajara? Not LCS or the kids library in SJC. Am trying to turn a 25 y/o Mexican amiga on to reading and tear her away from the friggin' telenovelas!
Or bookstore.
Gracias.

Re: Library/Biblioteca
I have heard that the University of Guadalajara may loan library books to expats. You could ask.

Thanks. This may be a no-go but I want to at least try. I took her to a FIL on the plaza in Chapala and kept showing her what looked like the Young Adults section but she showed little interest and her eyes never lit up. Instead, she bought 3 books for the 1 year old child she cares for.

Find books that tell the same telenovela stories.

Romeo & Juliet, in Spanish, might be easy to find.

There is a used book store where Rochatas used to be (near Cafe Arbol) in Chapala - haven't been in but there seems to be quite a few books.

Good idea, RVG! I will look for that.
Wide Sky! Just the info I was looking for! I will go there asap. Hope it's not just books for gringos in English. . .

Re: Library/Biblioteca
I would look for a dirt cheap used Kindle and load it up with free ebooks. Amazon has a ton of freebies as do several other sources. Of course, you will not find current best sellers among the freebies but there is an amazing amount of older books just waiting to be discovered.
I am an avid reader despite my public school education doing everythig possible to quash that. Shakespeare was one of the greatest weapons in their arsenal. Give me a history, a biography, or a technical manual and I will be entertained for hours.RVGRINGO wrote:Romeo & Juliet, in Spanish, might be easy to find.

The biblioteca behind the Casa de Culchura (spelling) in Jocotepec should have some adult books

Not a bad idea, Matt, may have to do that. This is a young lady who has never read a book for entertainment and the concept evades her. Her mother might use a paperback for kindling . . .

Re: Library/Biblioteca
Maybe check out graphic novels as a bridge between video and print to pique interest in reading for pleasure.
Also telenovelas can be background while doing something else but reading not so much.

Yes! The genre, like any, runs the gamut from trash to treasure. But it does have people reading!

I didn't know there was a genre like this. Sounds like a good way to get people reading. I'll look for books with pictures, good idea. Thanks.

Pick up some magazines. While they won’t be high culture she will at least get started reading something. And there will be pictures. . Baby steps.

Magazines! Another good idea.
I was hoping for something riveting, a page-turner, for her. A novel. I had Nancy Drew in mind. A mystery or something she will finish and not just put down. It's an accomplishment to finish your first book. I want her to relish that satisfaction.

Re: Library/Biblioteca
I have a small Kindle, loaded with English books that can be cleared. It is yours if you want it. The screen is about 3x5. Seems to work fine. I have never gotten interested in using it.

Re: Library/Biblioteca
She might like using a Kindle since she’s young so the technology might appeal. Nice offer, Windrider.

Re: Library/Biblioteca
OMG! How nice of you! Ohhh, yes, I'd love to have it and she will be shocked. She will love it. She has no computer, no internet or wifi, and only a phone with a cracked screen but she's pretty internet savy and uses fb. She'll figure it out.
So. To put books on it . . . she has no credit card so an Amazon account is not an option. If I use my account, how do I protect myself from charges?
