Costco membership; is it worth it?
I see there is a Costco delivery service (assume it's still running) here.
Considering the $500 membership and the really nominal charges for delivery, is there any real benefit to get a membership?
There is also the $150 round trip on the toll road (one hour each way) plus gasoline.
I'm assuming the shopper(s) use their membership card, and maybe there is some bonus plan for perks if they spend so much $$ at Costco.
What if some of your items are not on the list? Will they search it out?
Thanks.

Not worth it! BUT it is a nice trip and breaks the routine we fall into. Costco is no bargain. Most of the time local shopping pays off.

Re: Costco membership; is it worth it?
I have read that a Costco member can buy a non-member a gift card, then one could shop the same as a Costco member without the $50 membership fee. We are members so I have never confirmed if this applies to Costco Mexico.

Yes, there is a Costco delivery service weekly. You don't need to be a Costco member to use it.

The Costco membership isn't $50US, it's 500 pesos--a bargain.

73 pesos each way, use the macrolibramiento, pay the toll, every time I go to Costco.
But then I live in San Antonio Tlayacapan, on the planet Mars.

Using the toll road to get to Costco is optional-depending on where you live. I never use it to go there.
My membership is "free" so I use Costco for the great variety of things they sell. It is worth it to me.

Re: Costco membership; is it worth it?
Probably not cost effective for me, but as one poster said, it's an easy drive, get us out of the house, can walk around and maybe do some impulse shopping and last but not least, have either a light lunch from all the free samples being given out or at the small food court.
Also, having a sleeper van, I can get tires and larger items if I want. Also, there is the super Soriana right across from the Costco, and I'll guess possibly some free desert samples there.

Re: Costco membership; is it worth it?
I guess I feel it's worth it because I have no intention to relinquish my membership, which also works when visiting NOB.
I get to hand pick all my meat, fish, fruit, veg., products, check the expiration dates and browse all the seasonal products, especially at Christmas. My wife and I usually blow most of a day up there and have lunch in Costco. The only issue we have is always buying more than we intended! Then there's Home Depot a little further up the road......

We have the Executive membership ($1000) and get 2% back and over a year, we earn back the $1000 plus another $1500-$2000. You are allowed 3 cards under one membership, so our daughter has one. We use the card here and in the US when we are there.

Re: Costco membership; is it worth it?
I would not have one if I lived in Ajijic full time. It is some 65 Km to the closest Costco. However because I live in Seattle part time and the closest Costco is less than 4 miles away, I go there quite often and find my Costco membership worth it.

Don't have a Costco membership, prefer frequenting the small businesses locally. Hardly use WM for the same reason. Left my compulsion to consume when I left the US.

Re: Costco membership; is it worth it?
Compulsion to Consume is not part of my shopping Costco, for which I use the service that shops there and brings it to our door. It's about saving money on bulk items and getting quality goods. It's easy to shop the website and saves us from having a unlovely trip to Guadalajara in the traffic. Besides, there's no need to have a Costco card to do this.
Produce, bakery goods and meats, we buy locally.

Re: Costco membership; is it worth it?
For our household the purchase rebate offsets the annual membership cost.
Its worth it to us to save on the bulk items, e.g. TP, paper towels, Kleenex, laundry stuff, garbage bags and of course DOG FOOD.
My wife always gets a laugh out of me. I rail against the meat prices at Costco. Then she reminds me of our last grocery shopping trip in New York city or Toronto.

Re: Costco membership; is it worth it?
I mostly use it for bulk paper goods, tuna fish and, btw, some excellent prices on Scotch Whisky. I do about once every two months (or less) and use the western route - so no tolls.
And,, we have a Canadian membership, so there's n additional cost.

Re: Costco membership; is it worth it?
We never go to Costco as it takes too long. I buy everything either locally or online.
Edit..I did have a friend pick me up a set of speakers at Costco cause they weren't available online.

Bob You are retired aren't you. LOL
Actually I do combine Costco trips with visits to the Abastos, Tonala, Home Depot etc. to save on driving aggravation.

My dogs love their dry dog food, chicken and rice. I have the delivery service bring it plus the printer cartridges are cheaper and are actually in stock.

Well not really as we have our own business, I manage the bookings for another hotel, this website and occasional mining companies exploration adventures. Add in the fishing trips and visiting friends from NOB and it leaves me a little short some days. Lets call it "semi retired".....lol.

Another interesting angle.
We saw a sectional sofa on display at Costco a month ago. We went online and ordered it with free delivery for the same price at their web site.

.....and you managed to get 64 Ajijic Malecon benches refurbished in your spare time. Which even earned thanks from Maincoons. I stand in awe.

Re: Costco membership; is it worth it?
I love Costco! Meat quality is good and wine selection excellent... Costco is one of the world's biggest wine buyers which means better prices... While not a big fan of Wally World we do shop there... I am not a shopping aficionado and I like the in and out convenience... We do go to Super Lake for an occasional item and definitely to Panchos... but the bulk of our shopping is with Costco... It helps to have an extra freezer and a large pantry, however...
