Driving to San Miguel de Allende - Recommended Route

Hola All, we will be driving next week to San Miguel de Allende from Lakeside. I Googled and Waze the directions to find 2 main routes with pretty similar ETA's:

#1) (Has Tolls) Hwy 35 past Ocotlan and La Barca to Hwy 150 to Hwy 90, etc... and north in Celaya to San Miguel

#2) North past Guadalajara, to Lagos de Moreno (Hwy 80) then south past Leon and Guanajuato, etc.

Suggestions on safety and road conditions, por favor??

For those that don't use TOB, take the toll highways. Always safer and you get the "Green Angels" to assist in any bteakdown.
