Not all of the polyps in your colon are bad but they remove them as a safety precaution. They can't tell which ones may turn cancerous. Better safe than sorry. How about letting the breed die out?

How about the opinion of many courts, cities etc that find the breed to be a menace to society?

Then you have doctors and lawyers whose opinions people sometimes depend on. Guess we're all just a bunch of fools.

Why don't you go read the opinions of experts versus media hype and "stats". I gave you a link to one of the most popular dog behavior specialists on the subject. The AVMA & CVMA oppose any ban on pitbulls. Are they all "full of shit". What about Dobermans, Rottwielers, Akita's, Mastifs? Should they all be banned?

Re: New family member
True story, family pit raised from puppy..8 yr old male, not abused.
Nearby was a shooting range so Bullet was used to noise in fact 4 years to be exact. One day he freaked ran up the road and into a neighbors property and killed her 4 small dogs. They had never had a problem ever.he was quarentined and his family begged for him to be spared death, being a small town Bullet was spared. Fines, restitution and many tears and apologies given. Several months later Bullet attacked the 4 year old daughter while she was running to great her daddy when he arrived home from work. Bullet was put down.
Personally I will never own one and whenever there is one near we are always on alert. Whether it is a pit, shepard, dobie, rot or whatever large or small dog ss a respectful dog owner you should keep your animals under control and if something goes wrong be prepared to take responsibility.

We have small children in our home as well as a little Pug,Iwould never trust any of the above mentioned breeds to be around them.I'm no expert on dogs, that's just how I feel about it.

From your statements it appears to be very little. You had a bad experience and condemn the whole breed. This whole argument is very reminiscent of similar discussions I have had with people over the dangers of Mexico. These are people that only read the media hype and condemn the whole country based on those reports or those that visited Mexico once and had a bad experience. They really have no other experience what so ever.
You still haven't answered any questions about the other large, potentially dangerous breeds.

Your choice. When I owned my hobby farm we had a Pitbull, a Rottweiler and a Rott/Shepard cross at the same time with little kids, cats, a smaller dog, bunnies, chickens and various other barnyard animals around. Never had a single incident. We raised all the dogs from puppies and that is how they were brought up.

I you are genuinely interested look up schutzhund, even on Wikipedia. They are profiled and only proven bloodlines are used. Shutzhund is big in Mexico too. Those dogs are incredible, they make the police dogs look like mall cops.

Yeah right, my experience and those of several others here have no validity. Nor do the 60% of deaths by one breed of dog. Have your fantasy. Hope it doesn't bite you in the ass one day or worse.

Actually I am not interested. I am not looking for a guard dog or trained sport dog of any sort. Those are the ones that can snap. I am looking for a family pet that isn't trained to attack anyone ever and happen to love pitbulls. The first one I owned was way before they become popular with druggies and other abusers who trained them to be deranged attack dogs. The first one I liked was the pitbull on the "Our Gang" franchise from the 1930's or 40's. I think his name was Petey the Pup. Of course that was way before Mexico and Pitbulls were considered dangerous.

Look on the bright side - with everyone scared of your new dog, you can train him to "hold" your parking spot in front of your house and no forum member would dare mess with him!

Re: New family member
Wow.... opinions & assholes...
Where to start....
Chows ( chinese fighting dogs ) were also bred for fighting.... I'm sure there are several other breeds.
Terriers... are intelligent... the same can't be said for many other breeds..
Bull- Staffordshire- American Staffordshire Terriers are built incredibly strong... it's where they get their reputation... in a fight, they usually win
Pitbulls are much maligned... the same negativity should be directed at the individual asshole owners who made
their dogs crazy...
In a household situation... I would recommend a Female...they Nurture and Protect....
Males tend to be Territorial & Defensive... especially with other Dogs
Once Any Animal gets a Taste For Blood.... U have a problem!!
Folks get something in their head's bout something they don't like... and any reason will pop outta their mouth's....
Me.... I don't like Brussel Sprouts!!

Re: New family member
A 60 something man was taken down and killed by two pitts that got out that lived near him in Memphis. He was just out walking. Really a tragedy all round.
On the other hand we "pet sit" a staffordshire terrier" for a couple of months. 60 pounds of solid muscle. We have little dogs and cats. The owner said it wouldn't be a problem.
The first thing he did was rush our 17 pound, never been scared of nothin', tiger stripe boy and actually scared him! I punished the dog and the cat watched. After that, Pip would rub under the dogs chin, watching him the whole time... if the dog batted an eye lash...Whap whap whap!! the dog would be a statue.... you could almost watch him sweat! That cat punished him for weeks.... very rotten much loved kitty. But... it certainly showed that Pitts can be trained and can control themselves...if handled right.
The Chihuahua girls absolutely led him around by the nose.

Another "good" Pitt is owned by a friend. Sniffer mothers everything. Never been aggressive with other animals or people...with one exception. She has a vendetta against snakes. She kills copperheads and water moccasins with great joy. She's 14 now and never been bitten... just an amazing old girl.

Re: New family member
Five pages of coverage? Bob has already acquired the pup. Obviously, he's heard the pros and cons of that breed before and even owned one in the past.
If it doesn't bother him to own a dog that scares the shit out of some of his visitors/tenants, it's his call.
We have friends with three of them and the first half hour of our first visit consisted of reassurances re how nice and harmless they were. We hadn't said a word. Personally, I'd rather have a dog without a bad breed rep., but that's just me.
No minds and hearts are ever changed in this kind of debate anyway.
