What unusual supplements do you use? - Page 3 Empty MSM>>Methylsulfonylmethane

Post by espíritu del lago Tue Apr 30, 2019 6:07 am

Methylsulfonylmethane

Origin: Organic sulfur compound found naturally in fruits, vegetables, grains, animals and humans.

Dosage: Tablets, liquid, capsule or powder, topical and oral. Typically 1,000 mg to 3,000 mg daily with meals.

Claims: Reduces pain and inflammation.

What we know: MSM is an organic sulfur compound. Sulfur is needed to form connective tissue. MSM also seems to act as an analgesic by lessening nerve impulses that transmit pain.

Studies: A 2006 pilot study of 50 men and women with knee osteoarthritis showed that 6,000 mg of MSM improved symptoms of pain and physical function without major side effects. No large, well-controlled human studies have been performed.

MSM may cause stomach upset or diarrhea. Don’t use MSM if you are taking blood thinners.

I just saw Ambien mentioned in tonight’s news with the government demanding stronger warnings of its side effects. Years ago when I changed work shifts my Dr. prescribed Ambien to help me sleep. A couple days later I started experiencing panic attacks. Very scary. Stopped the Ambien.
Vicodin, Tylenol#3, Zanax, Valium, etc. all do a number on me. I guess being a junkie was never for me.

CBD oil, i sleep like the dead. Great stuff.

So I went to a specialist the other day for further opinion on my arthritic symptoms. I told him I was using CBD oil along with anti inflammatory meds. He grinned ear to ear and said keep on using it. He remined me again as I was leaving "fumar mota is muy bueno" for my condition.

I'm getting feedback like that from a lot of people who open up to their Doctors about both CBD oil, THC oil and half 'n half. It would appear that the Doctors here are more than well aware of the positive effects but will not initiate the conversation. How refreshing.

Jajajaja Love your doc.

Watch out for the anti inflamms, tho, try to get off them or at least take the smallest dose you can to achieve the results you need. They can eat holes in your stomach and alcohol exacerbates it. But, that's not the worst thing, the worst thing is you can never take them again. And they are so effective. Suerte.

Well I am on Dorsal and CBD oil and I got a cortisone shot the other day. Haven't felt this pain free in 15 years. I hope the shot lasts a while. My C Reactive protein (which is a marker for inflammation) went from 19 to 0.37 after that shot.

After the 3 weeks on Dorsal I am going to stop taking it and just go with the oil to see if that holds it off. The cortisone shot was miraculous......

Yerba Mate/South American Holly
mate, matte,  tea

Yerba mate is the dried leaves and stems of a South American holly and like other members of the holly family, the mate tree has bright red berries and shiny green leaves. The term  mate is a Guarani Indian word for gourd, referring to the hollowed out gourds once used as cups to drink the tea.

The tea has been used for centuries as a health tonic and stimulant beverage by the South American native peoples, and is still used as such today.
The ancient inhabitants of South America valued the mate leaves highly and drank the beverage prepared from it to serve as an energizer as well as refreshment.

Drinking mate with friends from a shared hollow gourd (also called a mate in Spanish, or cabaça or cuia in Portuguese) with a metal straw (a bombilla in Spanish, bomba or canudo in Portuguese) is an extremely common social practice in Argentina,Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Chile, eastern Bolivia and Southern Region, Brazil and also Syria and Lebanon.

Holly leaves were once used in traditional herbal teas, but South American holly, Yerba mate is much better known and widely used. Like other members of the holly family, the mate tree has bright red berries and shiny green leaves that make a very Christmas-y looking plant. Try drinking a cup of yerba mate to help you gather some non-nervous energy to make it though the holidays.

Native Indians inhabiting the southern regions of the United States also brewed a potent tea from the leaves of an indigenous holly tree in America. It is believed that this particular tea called the ‘black drink' may possibly have had an important function in ceremonial purification. It may be noted that the Holly leaves enclose caffeine and occasionally the pioneers employed this tea in the form of an alternate for tea that was imported.

Yerba mate contains healthy antioxidants and has been a folklore favorite in South America used to reduce inflammation in arthritis and gout. Drinking green and roasted yerba maté over time has cholesterol-lowering potential. Additionally, it is believed to act to assist dieters in reducing food cravings and by helping you feel fuller, longer.

Consumption of mate enhances the physical as well as mental vigor level for a brief period. Hence, it is not surprising that mate possesses features that are quite similar to those of tea and coffee.

It also functions like a gentle analgesic or pain killer and has diuretic properties that help in increasing the urine outflow. Mate is an important therapeutic herb that is frequently used to cure headaches, neuralgic and rheumatic pains, migraine, fatigue and minor depression. In addition, mate has also been found to be useful in treating diabetes.

Brewing the leaves of the tree and it was thought that taking this infusion induced sweating and was, therefore, given to patients suffering from malaria as well as other intermittent or persistent fevers. Was a common medication for treating jaundice.
Studies on mate have shown it to display noteworthy properties to combat cancer.

( note, do not mistake the North American Holly from the South American, even though they have many of the same healing factors ).

I wish I could! A trusted native American Indian friend recommended  that I use it. Problem is I don't have a source for the 'South American Holly', not the North American Holly!

I posted here hoping someone could locate it. I might be able to find some thru 'Merriweather's Foraging'. He is local here in Texas. You can peruse his website 'Foraging Texas'. He also has a book on Amazon. I have his book and it's an execellent guide and has an extensive herb collaboration!

I have about thirty Yerba Mate seeds. Was looking to grow a bush or two. Then I found upon researching that this is a difficult plant to incubate, then it takes three years to produce a harvest, then another year to ferment. That's a long wait for a cup of tea! If you want the seeds - free.

10 Proven Health Benefits of Turmeric and Curcumin

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/top-10-evidence-based-health-benefits-of-turmeric

Turmeric may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence.

Many high-quality studies show that it has major benefits for your body and brain.

Twice a day, we take 1/2 tsp of turmeric, 1/2 tsp ginger, with 1/4 tsp fresh ground pepper to help fight inflammation. I was not a believer, my hubby was taking it and his arthritis got so much better that I decided to give it a try. It works, but you must take the pepper to make it effective. I just put all the spices in a glass, add some water and drink up...yes it is yucky. I used to have such a hard time with inflammation in my gums, having to get my teeth cleaned every three months to fight tartar...now, healthy gums and no tartar at all and go every six to eight months (just to be sure😉).

Yes, the link you provided does mention that "because curcumin is fat-soluble, consuming it with fat may increase absorption". Thanks.

I have been meaning to add exactly this to my regimen. A friend of mine in the Valley swears by this.

Duly noted again. Thanks for the testimony and reminder.

This isn't a supplement, but I do what's called oil pulling. It involves vigorously swishing coconut oil around in your mouth first thing in the morning (scrape your tongue first) for up to 20 minutes and then spitting it out into the garbage. After swishing for a while, it will get watery and that's when you spit it out. For me, it got watery quite quickly at the beginning but it takes longer now. You can find info about it online.

I started doing it when a root canal got infected and, believe it or not, it did 'pull' pus out that I could scrape off my gum where it meets the cheek. However we were heading NOB so I ended up taking antibiotics anyway.

My teeth did get whiter as well.

After doing it every day for several months I started getting acid reflux, which I had never had before, so I stopped for a while and only do it once a week or so now with no reflux problem.

Why would it cause acid reflux if you aren’t swallowing it.

I guess just having the oil in the mouth signals the stomach that something's coming its way. When it happened, I searched online to see if the oil pulling was causing it and found that others had experienced the same.
