I understand that the cruzroja has a few donors of Tony's blood type, but not enough. And it's possible that several of the people on the list are not here now.

Tony still needs several blood donors lined up before they will do the surgery next week.

I know one person who died of a heart attack waiting for the IMSS. Please don't let that happen here.

I called Dr. Juan this morning and Tony needs 6 more pints of blood. So today Dr. Juan is trying to find 6 'donors' who will sell their blood. He figures it will cost about 400 pesos a pint or 2,400 pesos. I told him at those prices to put us in for a pint and I'd find 5 others to kick in too. (hint-hint)

I didn't know blood was so hard to come by and that is a scary fact! So I'm wondering if there is a "blood registry" and if there isn't there should be.

Put me down for a pint Roof. You cover me and I'll either paypal you the money or send you a cheque.

Yes, there is a donor list with their blood types at the Cruzroja website. The function is administered by Norm Pfeifer. It lists the qualifications to donate which are very stringent. Both age limitations, no dental work in the past 3 months, and no medicines - check out the list here:

Thanks simpsca, and yikes, that's a short list! I'd get on that list if they'd take my blood, like pronto.

The problem is that there are names on the list and they are not here any longer. Like every thing lakeside there is turnover.

Yes, Houston we do have a problem. But if you looked at the requirements, no medicine, no dentist appointment in the past 3 months, etc. and age limitation, and no blood diseases. I don't know anyone who actually can give blood from the North American population. One poster here did line up 2 donors but one was his gardener. I don't know anyone who is not taking medicine (including me) and I was just at the dentist last week. I tried to line up a friend when I had surgery 10 years ago, but he had just turned 65 and they would not let him donate. Fortunately I did not need blood after all.

I know all the restrictions... we are just 4 short of the requirement.

I hope Juan Pablo is able to find some paid donors for you Tony. I have been posting all over 4 boards and found at least two will donate blood and lots who are willing to help you with money to pay for donors. I am hoping your doctors has contacts at a a university or trade school to find the donors. One poster has gotten his gardener to donate. But it's routine in Guadalajara for students who meet the age requirements to donate for money.

My understanding is this is how it's done in Mexico and you need blood - there
are university students, etc. willing to donate for money. In Tony's case it's
a lot, but normally you would only need to pay for a pint or two. At 400 pesos
plus transportation, that's cheap compared to the US.

I have a question which is a little off topic, sorry, but related. Is it possible for one to donate their own blood for their own use or as, I dunno, a blood bank account?

I know you can do that in the US, I don't know about here. Best to talk to your doctor. I had a friend in NYC who needed back surgery and she had her blood donations saved - which she made over a year - in case she needed blood during surgery, then she could have her own blood.
