Gas shoortage and Airport drive warning Empty Gas shoortage and Airport drive warning

Post by Canada_Mike Fri Jan 11, 2019 1:59 pm

There are two gas stations just before the airport. The lines extend for about a kilometer and half, and end up blocking both lanes It was not bad this morning going in, but coming back about 12:30 it was terrible. Give yourself a LOT more time if you have to go.

Cheers,

According to the latest news, the problem isn't a gas 'shortage', it's how to deliver the fuel to different places. They don't want to use the pipelines because of vandalism and theft. Oil tankers are stranded at the ports in Mexico because the storage facilities are full.

If that is true why are we getting the gas without a problem in Chiapas and it is delivered by truck.. We do not have a pipeline so it has always been delivered that way. The problem is the places where the pipelines are being shut down because of the theft so the gas has to be trucked and that is where the problem is. There is plenty of gas at the source.

Maybe if people would only order their regular amounts of Gasoline and not "Fill Up' Maybe the problem would not be so bad?
I wonder how many people realize the horrendous amount of stealing that goes on

What do you consider a regular amount? My regular amount is a fill up.

The problem only happens in states where there is a pipeline and we now know that lots of thieves are taking gas from the pipeline, obviously they sell to the stations and now that the pipeline is shut down many stations are out of gas.. There is not shortage whatsoever in Chiapas where there is no pipeline and Pemex delivers the gas . I also found out that the gas we buy out of plastic containers in the highlands is not stolen gas...so Places where the thieves are involved in gas delivery have problems right now. There is not shortage from the refineries.

Agree with Brigitte. Over the years that I've traveled in Mexico, I've bought gas from fereterías in very remote beaches and pueblos numerous times. Always stored in those plastic bins. Probably before pemex even had pipelines and fairly recently in Sayulita and Tenecatita. Although it might be, just because gas is stored in plastic bins does not mean it is stolen. Anyone who has ever lived in rural Mexico knows that.

I've also bought gasoline from those plastic containers for the same cost as Pemex. The Roja and Verde were the same price. I assume it was stolen.

Here is an article explaining the current situation and where the stolen gas is sold. Primarily rural areas of Mexico.

Long lines have hit Chapala as of this morning.

I don't drive a lot but I filled up my cChevy, Van (Ouch! large tank) and two plastic containers that I always use for my ATV.

I've got a feeling that the ATV might have unknowingly been my best investment as of now.

I think the question in a lot of minds is if this situation going to be the norm, and if so, for how long? Personally, I think it's a good and creative idea by the new President, however, I don't know how long people will handle an hour or more waiting. And no one is going to do less than a fill up because they don't want a long wait every few days.

I like the "shoot on site" for gasoline theft from pipelines.

Did anyone read the story where a guy was caught stealing gas, I think from a neighborhood store that sells it, and the vigilantes branded him with a hot iron with the sword "THIEF" ON HIS BACK?

I just got back from Walmart, and the carretara is empty. As we all know on a Saturday it's normally packed. For many people the long waits are the least of it. The real issue is the economic impact. Tourists not driving from Guadalajara ti the Lake will cost many inn keepers, restaurants, and ancillary services a lot of money.

I imagine there will be violent protests within the week. Bus burnings, blockades, explosions, the usual stuff when the citizens are unhappy here. The government may need a different approach. I also agree with the "shoot them on sight" method for pipeline crooks…..

I have to go to the airport later this afternoon as I can't trust that the taxi's there will have fuel. I will report back.

Yes, do keep us posted.

I am going to GDL at 0345 Monday. I'm also concerned about the taxi/private drivers having gas.

Will be interesting to see who may try to track on a "surcharge" for having to wait for gas. I don't yet hear of the price jumping up, but, supply and demand  -------------------

I would think/hope those vehicles that are public necessities, axis, buses, trash trucks, ambulances, police will be getting a priority. That would cause major public "feedback." I wonder how long until we see stations with "OUT OF GAS" signs.

They are already "out of gas" around here and just about everywhere in GDL. The cartels can charge way more for their stolen gas now...…..

Yep, not a speck of traffic. Take a bus is right! Better yet, walk. And take your dogs with you.

Are the buses running . . . ?

they just put orange cones or close up shop no need for signs.. if you see a place without cars you can be sure there are closed and are out of gas.. I would not blame the cabbs for charging more it has to be terrible for them and really hurt their income.

The gov has contracted almost 4000 privately owned tanker trucks to start delivering gas today in addition to Penex' tankers. The trucks will be running 24/7 and it is expected that the shortages will be over in 48 hours.

Jobs!

Yes, Mexico News Daily. I tried to save and post the link here but was not able. Just google it, most current issue. Also hired around 4000 more pipeline guards.
See if you can post the link ferret.

Thanks!

I went to the airport at 4:00pm yesterday. No problem at all either way. There were only 2 stations with lineups. Both southbound but they didn't impede traffic. I went out this morning and the 5 stations I checked had no gas yet. Ajijic, SAT, Riberas and the two in Chapala. The northern Chapala and SAT had lineups but no pumps running. Maybe people know gas is on the way to those two??

Hard to believe there is 3500 tankers sitting around waiting to be rented....guess we'll see.

Here is the whole story for those that can't access MND:

Pemex yesterday approved a strategy developed by Canacar to speed up the supply of gasoline.
In a statement, Canacar said that “in the next 48 hours, a strategic plan that strengthens the distribution of fuel by highway will be implemented.”

Tanker trucks will begin operating “24 hours a day, seven days a week, with the protection of the Federal Police,” it explained.
The government has committed to providing 8,300 police officers and 1,400 vehicles to guarantee security, Canacar said. The 3,500 private tanker trucks will be supplied by 150 companies.
“The 150 companies are ready to provide professional and efficient service to immediately restore fuel distribution in affected areas,” Canacar said.
Pemex has committed to making its fuel terminals more efficient and to speed up the loading and unloading of trucks.
The state oil company is making greater use of tanker trucks to distribute fuel because the federal government has closed several major pipelines as part of a strategy to combat fuel theft.

But the changed distribution method has caused fuel shortages at gas stations in more than 10 states because Pemex has been unable to transport product quickly enough in its own tankers.
The National Trucking Chamber said that a working committee made up of representatives of different divisions of Pemex, the Federal Police, the railway industry and Canacar will be formed to monitor the new distribution strategy, “recognizing that some pipelines will be opened gradually, either intermittently or permanently.”

I posed this question to a friend but don't know if it's feasible or even possible.
Is there some kind of colourant that could be put in the gas that goes in the pipelines that would easily distinguish stolen gas from legal gas?
Is there something additional that would remove that colour that could be added to the gas when it is delivered to gas stations legally? Or a special filtered nozzle on the legal trucks?
