Gary here, I'm reading a whole kindle stack by Christopher Brookmyre (that's why Lesley is doing jigsaws Very Happy ). He is a canny Scot and very good writer, but it is a challenging read because he includes a lot of wry observations about British politics and pop music. Luckily, I spent some time in Aberdeen and am about the same age and tastes of music as him.

A good one to sample is "A Big Boy Did it Then Ran Away" - which is mostly about chasing a terrorist.

My absolute favorite book on that subject is,Drug Lord by Terrence Poppa, don't let the sensational title fool you,it's a seriously good read that's set in your neck of the woods.

Just finished KIKAFFIR by Ian Martin ~ very dark but thought provoking. Hope to finish THE WRECKING CREW by Mark Chisnell today ~ a reminder that life isn't black and white but many shades of grey. Oh, and the PORTABLE ATHEIST, Essential Reading for the NonBeliever by Christopher Hitchens whenever I want to think.

Another vote for Magaña's lending library. So much more than the NYT best-sellers list to choose from!!!

I enjoy the series Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and the secondary character side stories.

Earl Shorris 'Life and Times of Mexico' is the BEST for historical perspective.

I like the JD Robb futuristic murder mysteries.

"Winter of the World" by Ken Follett, the second in the Century Trilogy. Long books, but very readable and well researched.

"I love to read and get all my books from Cafe Magana and because of the snowbirds, they are right now overflowing and have some good stuff. I've given up looking for specific authors and just grab things off the shelves, usually based on cool titles or book covers. More often than not, i've discovered some fabulous new (to me) authors and books." -- lucky

That is exactly how I "shop" Magana´s books and have the same result you do, lucky. Great books, new (to me) authors, little treasures I never would have read otherwise. Then there are the books you find that you always meant to read one day and never did. I got Satanic Verses there. It was a slog in the beginning but became utterly fascinating (even though I kept having to google things to really understand). When I finish a book like that I want a couple of murder mysteries I can relax into.

Seems to me I remember reading a tragic tale of a broken-down and delusional old man in the English version. Seems to me it made a boring-ass movie and an equally boring stage play. I was surprised to find the humor and sarcasm in the Spanish version.

What are you reading now?

" La Mujer Dormida Debe Dar a Luz" por Ayocuan ( Velasco Piña

Actually a re-read. I highly recommend Antonio Velasco Piña. I think he still lives and probably still writing!

Vince Flynn's stories about Mitch Rapp...those are good.

And I like Regency historical murders mysteries...Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries by Ashley Gardner even my husband enjoyed enough to read one after the other and made sure I pre-ordered the next one.

We have close to 8000 books on memory sticks or DVDs, many of the full series or known and obscure authors. He read one Lee Childs and asked for the rest nd sure enough we had them. Love the Kindle.

I'm reading 'The Crippled God' the 10th and final installment in Steven Erikson's epic fantasy series 'The Malazan Book of the Fallen'. Truly one of the most in depth, broad reaching fantasy series' I've ever had the pleasure to read.

One of the few things I miss about living in the states is having access to good public libraries.

A lot of public libraries is the U.S. are building ebook and kindle collections. They are in a special format that limits the number of copies being lent out, and after the checkout period - poof - they are gone. The only small problem is that most of the public libraries offering ebooks charge for an annual membership. Just checkout from their online library. Another problem is that publishers are legally obligated to provide libraries with titles - but there was no stipulation 'when' - they could wait until the last day of the year for the big bestsellers. They used to argue 'short supply' - but that doesn't count anymore with digital ebooks.

I am reading The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul by Deborah Rodriguez. Interesting insight into Afghan culture.

I mostly read murder mysteries but prefer authors like Ian Rankin, J A Nance, Nevada Barr, John Sandford and Elizabeth George.

Flamingo, have you read her other book, The Kabul Beauty School? Excellent! If not, pretty sure I still have it if you want to swap the 2 books. . .

Also, did you know she has a little hair and beauty shop in Mazatlan??? Yes she does. She's such a cool lady.

Has anyone read The Bookseller of Kabul by Asne Seirestad? I'm half way through and not enjoying it! bummer The subject matter is fascinating but the story could be told SO much better. I'm disappointed. If someone else says to stick with it, I might but it doesn't look like it's going to be a riveting read.

Life is too short to read bum books.

How about "Cutting for Stone" re medicine in Africa, by a physician? Good read, IMO. Forgot author, but easy to Google.

I am currently working my way through Asimov's Guide to the Bible, books one and two. About thirteen hundred pages, but very fascinating. I am a history freak, and the history lessons in this book are wonderful. After that, I have several science fiction novels lined up.
