What is a good tip for Waiters
We have eaten out a few times. We're not sure what to tip. Also it seems like they discussed how much they're going to charge. We paid 270 pesos for a bowl of soup with meat and three sodas. Does that sound correct? I think they see us coming!

Where, yes? They have caviar in that soup? Was it one bowl or two?
Tipping: Ordinary restaurant....10 to 15%. Fancy Restaurant with good service, maybe 20%

What Gringal said!
Please do yourself a favor as a newcomer and do not fall into the trap of thinking that the Mexicans are out to screw you! With time and experience, you should find that restaurants and their wait staff are typically very honest and thankful for the business.

That was over $20 dollars...How much would the same amount as you had, cost where you came from?

Sorry to doubt, but I suspect lost in currency conversion. The numbers are way too far off.

Re: What is a good tip for Waiters
Wow....how long did they discuss it?
Seriously, remember that restaurant checks in Mexico include the sales tax (IVA) in the price and total, whereas in many places in the world that is added separately. So a 10% tip on the total bill is about 12% of the food total and 15% is about 18%. Ten percent is probably expected and anything over is greatly appreciated (and should be earned). Upscale restaurants in Guadalajara should probably start at 15%.
You'll probably get a hundred opinions from ten people on this subject...this is only one.
No menu....ask prices before you order.

Re: What is a good tip for Waiters
We were in Jojotepec across from the central square, the name eludes me. I don't believe people in general, Mexican or not, are out to "screw me". I just thought it was strange they had to discuss the price between them when I asked for the bill. No menus. There were 3 bowls of soup and 3 sodas. I'm assuming it was not reasonable from some of the responses? Thanks for the tip advice. I wasn't sure what to tip but for lunch but I figured it was 10 percent.
Thanks,
Angie

Re: What is a good tip for Waiters
The soup had meat she chopped up into it. Not sure what kind. sort of fatty. tasted great. I suppose in the states 4.00 for a cup of soup 2.00 for a soda, 3 people 18.00. However, I thought it was going to be cheaper here. My bad, I guess.

Re: What is a good tip for Waiters
So....20 pesos per soda=60 pesos 70 pesos per bowl of soup/birria?=210.
Total=270 pesos. Yeahhh....OK
10% tip OK
No foul...no harm.

Re: What is a good tip for Waiters
Angie, you were at one of the birria places that Jocotepec is famous for. Birria is expensive and is a Jalisco traditional goat (sometimes lamb) stew - not meat soup. You were not ripped off or overcharged.
Having not been there, I have no idea what the discussion was about but very likely it had nothing to do with you or your bill unless you all had disputed the bill and they were rechecking it.
Again, birria is a little expensive you were not ripped off. Might be a good idea to pick up a guide book. . .

That is the going price and is well worth the great soup. Not out of line at all.

Re: What is a good tip for Waiters
birria is akin to hungarian goulash without the dumplings[tortillas on the side instead], so is not really a soup and for what you had you weren't ripped off. you didn't say 3 people in your op. a lot of times soda can be more expensive than cerveza as well.

Re: What is a good tip for Waiters
There are definitely cheaper restaurants around. The average Jose won't pop 270 for, say, three bowls of pozole with Sprites in Ajijic...

Re: What is a good tip for Waiters
I think you need that restaurant guide. It will give you a general idea about prices before you settle down for a meal. Even if it was special soup, there was some sticker shock.
We like to eat lunch out at sit down restaurants such as Yves', Tony's, Roberto's, Armando's, Tabarka and that general class of places. The entrees hover around 70-80 pesos each. A little more for some dishes. Soft drinks around 20 pesos. Panino's has NOB comfort food, but figure closer to 90 pesos per offering.
Happy lunching.

Re: What is a good tip for Waiters
birria is not a soup, it is a very filling meal as served in that plaza. and a meal for 3 including 3 pops should not be sticker shock[$22.50 cdn] unless you hail from bolivia where you can get a 3 course meal for $1.00 and a cerveza for 50 cents cdn.gringal wrote:I think you need that restaurant guide.
