How about "arrested, tried and sent to prison"? That works for me. Also, I thought that's what we do in a democracy, our possibly "former" system of government.

Almost all southern states have law if someone breaks into your house, you can shoot them. I see no difference.

You missed my point entirely. This is exactly what is wrong with the USA. That shooting people is acceptable.

Many years ago I read of a case in Texas where a Chinese foreign exchange student had been invited to a party at someone's home, but was lost and couldn't find the house. He went up and knocked on a door in the neighborhood to ask for directions, and the man of the house came to the door and shot the poor kid dead on the doorstep. The murderer got off by claiming he was protecting his family.

Oh, please. Stop with the pontificating.  In the ‘80’s when I go beaten up and raped in my room in Sint Maarten by a guy with a knife if I had had a gun he would have been dead and I would have been glad.  And I hate guns.

I would only be ashamed of Trump and his acolytes.

If these had been black rioters breaking into the Capital Building, they would have been shot as they entered. You don't have to shoot to kill but a few well aimed leg shots would have stopped it in its tracks. President Elect Biden is even saying these hoodlums were handled differently just because they were white. I feel probably more strong about this than some people because I served and retired from the Department of Defense after 28 years. This act goes against my upbringing where my father was a disabled veteran from World War ll and my own believes from my service. Had I been there I would have shot the ones who broke the windows and entered the building. Why do you think they were carrying hand ties for?

Back to the topic.

I have thought about this for a day or two and can't figure out why one would feel responsible or shame unless you voted for trump or supported him. I can't think of anything folk here could have done here to stop it. I can understand feeling bad but can't see how I can feel ashamed unless I was involved in this mess. We live in Mexico and I can't see how feeling ashamed can help the situation in the USA.
I do understand how others may feel differently. Maybe just maybe this is a wakeup call for many folks but for me its just another page of injustice in the history of the USA. I hope this causes us to grow and learn and avoid such messes in the future but I doubt it.

Since "we" have no idea what people in the rest of the world think about the majority of U.S. citizens' opinions, and since the greatest number voted for the other candidate in the last two elections, why should we assume that?
I'm not at all ashamed. I am assuming that our election of Biden assured the world that the greatest number want a different kind of government than the last.

Opinions aside, I would not shame the OP for being ashamed.

In most cases, the game of politics is a fairly calm spectacle. Occasional dirty tricks, and scandals, but generally quite boring to observe. This is why voter turnout is traditionally quite low. This all changed when a well experienced and skilled entertainer slipped into the US Presidency. He never did come close to making America great again, but he succeeded into making politics sensational again. Was there a market for sensationalism, oh yes, an enormous market. For an American weaned on professional sports, people picked their "teams" and became ever fanaytical followers. It reached the point, like in European Football leagues where superfans became violent hooligans. That is what we witnessed in Washington D.C.. Now that team has lost their chance for a prize and bragging rights. Now they must rebuild and recruit for another try at this. There is nothing distinctly American about this. The whole world has violent videos and clashes between sports fans. I would suggest then that this nothing more than the human condition, and has been for a long time. Are you ashamed of being a human? Do you at least try to become a better person?
