No one is on the hook. You choose to donate money or not. There are many more people who don’t donate than do. But everyone who goes to the malecon gets to enjoy the results. I think it would be nicer if those who do not believe it is the responsibility of residents to maintain the benches would skip these threads instead of venting about how people who contribute are suckers being taken advantage of.

Uh, besides donating money I was the only one who volunteered to apply the stain and urethane when Bob asked.  The only one, at least publicly. There has now been more discussion about what I said about the government than any help offered OR what I actually said.  Press on.

Although your post was my jumping in point, I was not referring to only you but to venting quotes in general. I am sorry I did not make that clearer. I understand your (and others) feelings about the government and residents undertaking duties not really theirs. I also understand why some people just want to get stuff done and do it. I think it would be better to start a separate thread for complaints about the government rather than jump into one like this. The anger or frustration is directed (perhaps rightfully) at the government but the people who are offering to help get caught in the cross fire.

Update: The stain has been ordered. It is a custom blend and should be ready next week. I met with the delagado, Juan Ramon, and he is making arrangements with the muni to provide the workers to restain all the benches. I'm hoping this second round of stain lasts longer than a year but the sun is brutal as we all know. Big thanks to bearded beemer who donated most of the proceeds that we needed and to those who offered to help with the staining.

My wife and I will pledge $1000 peso for a bench. We can't pay you until we get there in June.
